C00186 “Scanner Not Found” error, for Fujitsu Scanners

Summary:

This article describes how to troubleshoot a C00186 “Scanner Not Found” error, specifically with regards to Fujitsu Scanners.

More Information:

There is a known bug with Fujitsu Scanners where if they are plugged into a different USB slot than originally installed the driver is renamed. When plugged into a different USB, the computer considers them to be a separate Scanner, this causes confusion for Virtual Cabinet as it tries to engage a Scanner that it now believes isn’t there and the following error appears:

Whilst this is a Fujitsu bug, we do have ways of getting around the issue.

One of which is slightly more advanced (as provided by Fujitsu), however we have added it to this article should anyone wish to attempt (You may however want either your IT or ourselves to take a look at the advanced option for you, if you’d like us to take a look, please raise a ticket).

Basic:

Try plugging the Scanner into a different USB slot, close Virtual Cabinet and re-open it and then click “Scan” again, if you remember which slot the Scanner was plugged into before, then great, go straight for that one, if not, then no worries, plug into each free USB slot, close and re-open Virtual Cabinet and click Scan each time until you find the one that Virtual Cabinet is looking for.

Once plugged into the original USB slot, then Scanner should just work as normal through Virtual Cabinet after clicking “Scan”.

If you still have issues, please log a Support Ticket with us and we’ll take a look.

Basic (Single User System Only):

Please Read - Before you start, this fix is only recommended for Single User Virtual Cabinet systems, if you attempt this fix and you are on a Virtual Cabinet system with several users, you will be affecting the scan setting for all users and your colleagues are likely to lose their scanning functionality, even though you have regained yours.

First go to the Admin Tab, then click on “View Scan Settings” under the “Scan Settings” Section.

In the window that opens, select the Scanner Setting you are having trouble with (A) and then click Edit (B).

In the “Scan” section, you’ll see that the current “Scanner Name” is “Unavailable on this computer” (see screenshot below), if you click on the drop down box, you should then see a copy of the Scanner that is available on your machine, (For example “PaperStream IP fi-7160”) click on the available Scanner and then click “Save & Close”.

Then close and re-open Virtual Cabinet to re-attempt the scan. If you still have issues, please log a Support Ticket with us and we’ll take a look.

Advanced: (If you’d prefer us to take a look at this option for you, please raise a ticket)

This solution is provided by Fujitsu and involves altering a single line in one of the configuration files for the Scanner. It will also stop the issue from recurring should the scanner change USB slots in the future.

For newer Scanners the location of the config file is as follows: %Windir%\twain_32\fjicube\icwReadThreadParam.ini

  • %Windir% stands for Windows Directory, so on my machine, this is in C:\Windows\twain_32\fjicube\icwReadThreadParam.ini
  • Specify “twain_64” instead of “twain_32” for the file directory if TWAIN x64 drivers are in use

For older Scanners the location of the config file is as follows:

%Windir%\FJTWSTI.ini

  • %Windir% stands for Windows Directory, so on my machine, this is in C:\Windows\ FJTWSTI.ini

Once you find the ini file immediately take a copy of this file and store it somewhere safe, this is the fallback. Once you have done this please proceed as below.

Open the original config .ini file from the path specified above in Notepad or similar. Within the config File, under the [Common] Section, there will be a Key Called “IsNoSharp”, the value needs to be changed to 1 for this key to stop the issue from occurring. See our example below where the value has been updated, once this has been saved, close down Virtual Cabinet on the machine, and restart the Scanner, then try to Scan again. If you still have issues, please log a Support Ticket with us and we’ll take a look.
