Moving Your Virtual Cabinet Database to a New Location

Moving your Virtual Cabinet (VC) database is a simple enough procedure, however as it will require come VC downtime, you will need to follow the following steps to avoid any unnecessary disruption, or issues with the process:

  1. Log a support ticket with the helpdesk, as an engineer will to be involved in this process.
  2. Once this has been assigned let them know when you would like these works to take place.
  3. If you have enough notice, and would like to, arrange a quick scoping session with the engineer, and also take the opportunity to go over any questions you may have with the process.
  4. Once all arranged and you're at the time of the appointment, backup or copy the database, and move that copy/backup over to the new location.
  5. Reach out to the assigned engineer, get them a remote connection to the new location, and they'll go through all the reconfiguration steps.

How Do I Backup or Copy the Database?

If you are in any doubt about any of these processes please stop, and reach out to support, and they can assist or undertake the backup/copy as needed.

Copying the Database Files

  1. Stop all the Virtual Cabinet Services on the VC application server (this may be separate to the database server), make sure the Virtual Cabinet Business Layer is stopped last.
  2. Also check if services CCPrint or CCMail are present, they will also need to be stopped.
  3. Once the services are stopped, locate the .MDF and .LDF files in windows explorer for the database, copy those files and move the copies to the new location as needed.

Taking a Backup of the Database

  1. Stop all the Virtual Cabinet Services on the VC application server (this may be separate to the database server), make sure the Virtual Cabinet Business Layer is stopped last.
  2. Also check if services CCPrint or CCMail are present, they will also need to be stopped.
  3. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and open the instance the VC database is located.
  4. Right click the VC database, Tasks, Backup
  5. Make sure the backup type is Full, and you're backing up to Disk, (not tape if that's an option).
  6. Click Add and browse to a location you want to save the backup to, name it appropriately (including giving it the extension of .bak), click ok.
  7. Click ok on the main backup window and wait for the backup to complete.

Notes

  • The Virtual Cabinet services will need to stay “Stopped” once the Database has been moved as per the instructions above until we’ve performed any reconfiguration, so please factor this in to any downtime for this process.
  • If you get an access error when backing up the database, let support know, and they can login to the database as the VC service account user, which will have access to do so.
  • When copying the database from one location to another, if you've backed the database up, you can zip this file up prior to copying, which reduces the file size considerably, making the transfer much quicker.
