Preparing to upgrade beyond Virtual Cabinet 5.1

Introduction

From Virtual Cabinet version 5.1 onwards we are using Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 to run our product. Microsoft .NET is the backbone that Virtual Cabinet is built on, and upgrading this opens up new and exciting possibilities for our product.

We are also using Microsoft Edge to display web content within Virtual Cabinet.

This article details what you need to do to prepare for upgrading Virtual Cabinet to version 5.1 or later.

What do I need to do?

There are two new requirements for running Virtual Cabinet version 5.1:

  • Microsoft .Net Framework 4.8

  • Microsoft Evergreen Edge (WebView2)

You should look at installing these prerequisites before upgrading Virtual Cabinet. They are required on all computers running Virtual Cabinet.

Discontinued support

With the move to Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 we have had to discontinue support for these Operating Systems and versions of Microsoft Office:

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows Server 2008 (please note that Windows Server 2008 R2 is still supported)

If you are using Windows Vista or Server 2008 you will not be able to install and run Virtual Cabinet 5.1, and we would recommend that you upgrade your Operating System.

You may continue to use older versions of Virtual Cabinet with these discontinued Operating Systems, but you will not be able to upgrade, and you may miss out on bug fixes and security improvements.

Do I already have .NET 4.8?

Evergreen Edge (WebView2)

Microsoft Evergreen Edge (WebView2) is used to display web content within Virtual Cabinet. If you do not have it installed you can access most functionality in Virtual Cabinet, but some areas won't work.

Where it is used:

  • Discover tab

  • Messages tab for Portal messages

  • Portal reporting

  • Integration with Wórkiro

  • Authentication with Microsoft 365 Exchange Online

Do I already have Evergreen Edge (WebView2)?

Just because you have Edge installed on your computer doesn't mean you necessarily have the Evergreen Edge program that Virtual Cabinet needs to display web content inside VC. It is linked to Edge, but not usually installed as well.
